Wylye Valley Meditation is a voluntary organisation, running courses and events relating to Meditation and Buddhism in and around Warminster, Wiltshire, England.  Warminster is a market town at the head of the beautiful Wylye Valley which runs to Salisbury, along the southern edge of Salisbury Plain.

WVM began life in September 2006.  I  had moved from London where I was used to going to Kagyu Samye Dzong London Tibetan Buddhist Centre.  Once I was happily settled into my Wylye Valley cottage I looked around for a group to meditate with, but found nothing nearby.   The only answer was to found a group, so, after consulting with Lama Yeshe Losal at Samye Ling in Scotland, and with Lama Zangmo in London,  I offered a short course in Meditation.  My own formal meditation practice had begun in 1991 at Samye Ling, and after many teachings and regular short-term retreats, I had developed enough confidence to pass on some of what I had learned.  Since then I have been running the Meditation course three times a year, for 10 weeks at a time.  In response to requests I have also run an Introduction to Buddhism class.  The ‘core group’ has built up over the years, so, in the true spirit of enlightened self-interest, I have, by doing my best to pass on the teaching faithfully to others, made many meditation and dharma friends and now have a regular group to support my own meditation practice!

We also schedule informal retreat days about every three months, usually on a Sunday.

Each summer we hold a more formal Summer Meditation Weekend, with a special guest to give Buddhist teachings and to lead the meditation.  These guests have all been highly experienced meditation practitioners, all having completed the traditional Tibetan three or four year closed retreat at Samye Ling.

My background in formal meditation practice goes back nearly twenty-five years.  I took refuge with the late Akong Rinpoche in Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in 1991, and more recently again with Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, the current Abbot of Samye Ling.  In 1994 I completed the module in Tibetan Language and Culture at the School of Oriental & African Studies in London.  I have attended many teachings with Tibetan lamas of all four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism (including His Holiness the Dalai Lama), and have attended the Mahamudra course with Kentin Tai Situ at Sherab Ling Monastery in Himachel Pradesh, India.  This entailed 8 days’ study there each April for six  years, with specific practice commitments to carry out during the intervening year.  This course ended in April 2013.

Since 2013 I have trained in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy with tutors from the Oxford Centre for Mindfulness, and in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Exeter University Mindfulness Network.

For some years proceeds from the WVM courses and retreats went to the charity Rokpa UK.  Now, we have the vision in mind of a Well-being and Meditation Centre in the Wylye Valley itself.  Therefore, proceeds are now being directed towards this home-grown project.
